A tradition is any established routine. Usually, routines established in order to preserve a wide range of culturally significant ideas. The word tradition comes from the Latin traditio [meaning: giving up , surrendering, instructing, relating] Today, the word tradition is commonly used to designate specific practices and the various methods used by distinct cultures to maintain such practices. In English speaking societies, as well as others, a number of these cultural activities may include:

  1. Beliefs, customs and practices maintained by social interaction, such as saying "thank you", sending birth announcements, greeting cards, etc.
  2. Beliefs, customs and practices maintained by societies and governments, such as Federal holidays in the United States.
  3. Beliefs, customs and practices maintained by religious denominations and church bodies, such as sufism, Lutheranism, Judaism, and the various divisions within Christianity.
  4. Beliefs, customs and practices that are Prehistoric or have lost/arcane origins, such as trade, the teaching of language and education in general.

Should traditions be abandoned for those that want to be in a traditional unit but do not like the traditions?
Q. Traditions are passed from generation to generation. People know this in trying to get involved with traditional units such as schools, fraternities, sororities, certain military units, and brotherhood groups in lines of work. People want to join them cause of the honor or fame the units have but don't want to honor the traditions that go with it. So should the few that don't agree go elsewhere and form their unit or just endure it and maybe pass on those traditions they do not agree with instead of causing an uproar.

What are some fun Christmas traditions from your family of origin?
Q. My extended family has always had a blah sort of holiday season. Well, now all the "kids" are grown up and we are wanting to start some fun, family traditions for future generations. Any ideas would be much appreciated! Love and Christmas, The Wick family

A. We open all family presents on Christmas eve. We don't get as many presents as when we were kids, so mom divys up the presents and then we go around one at a time and open one gift, then it is the next person's turn to open one gift, etc and keep taking turns until all the presents are opened. We do this so we can all enjoy what everyone gets (when we were kids though, we would all just open our presents together since obviously kids can't wait to do it one at a time. LOL). Then on Christmas morning, Santa still comes. And yes, we are all grown. But what's fun is we even sneak "santa" gifts out for my mom too. And it's a free-for-all. We all just rush out to the tree and find our gifts and open them. We each get about one or two. … [cont.]
